Introducing Ali Wright
Starting Fall, 2017
We are excited to be welcoming Alicia Wright to Young Life staff. She will be working 20 hours/week in Grande Prairie. Her job will be to supervise and grow an existing team of volunteers. This team will be working hard to meet new teenagers and give them opportunities for positive community, safe adventure, mentorship, and leadership development. Along the way Alicia's team will be working hard to share with them who Jesus is and how he might play a role in their world. This is a training position which has the potential to turn into full time work in a couple of years.
a note from Dylan (area Director)
Alicia first popped onto my radar in 2014. I had a few Young Life teens working at Aeropostale and they talked about having a great manager. It turns out that this was Alicia.
Later that year, I was short leaders for RockRidge Canyon. Alicia stepped in as a cabin leader for those same teens, and she was incredible. I was impressed both by her ability to make people smile and her ability to listen well. Some of our kids had tough issues to work through, and she addressed them with wisdom and grace. I’ve also observed Alicia volunteer with youth in her church, and I have been excited about the great faithfulness she has shown them.
Alicia is especially passionate about working with marginalized youth. This is what Young Life is about-finding the kids who are too far on the fringes to feel a part of Christian community. We have kids dealing with broken homes, poverty, questions of sexual identity, self harm, substance abuse, and so many more issues. Many have professional helpers involved, but they also need positive peer community and caring adults who can come alongside them as “just friends.” I know that Alicia is going to do a great job of caring for these kids. I look forward to seeing how her team will serve these kids while patiently communicating God’s love and nature to them.
A note from alicia
Some of my best memories as a kid were made at summer camp. It seemed natural when, two days after graduating high school, I ended up in Grande Prairie working at Bear Lake Bible Camp. I went to PRBI the next year. Since then, my husband and I have found a church that we love being and serving in, and we’ve made many great friends. Grande Prairie has become my home!
Currently I am in my second year of school at GPRC where I am pursuing a degree in social work. I am in this program because I know many people are hurting in our community. I want to be a part of helping them find hope and healing. This is also why I am excited about Young Life. When I was a teenager, I had a caring adult couple come into my world to offer unconditional love and help me learn who God was. This couple later ended up becoming Young Life leaders, and I want to be like them. I know there are many teenagers in Grande Prairie who are not connected to churches but still need the love, acceptance, and message that Christian community has to offer. I’m excited to be part of a team that is going out into their world to find and care for these teens!
